Kids To Reign On Canal Street Saturday!

Those who haven’t considered a trip to Canal Street for a family activity should visit this Saturday when the Downtown Development District rolls out the first Kids on Canal Day with an array of holiday festivities. This event is part of the Canal Street: Your Home for the Holidays presented by the DDD and The Roosevelt Hotel.

Beginning at 10 a.m., Santa will be on hand at the Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel, 714 Canal Street, to collect wishes. And, children who bring a donation to Toys for Tots will also receive a free photo with Santa from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hot cider and cookies will be available for children and adults alike.

Calliope Puppets will present holiday performances at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at The Shops at Canal Place, followed by entertainment by Larry Seiberth at 1 p.m. and Troy Sawyer at 3 p.m.

From 12 noon to 2 p.m., Radio Disney will be outdoors near the Chateau Bourbon (former Chateau Sonesta) Hotel in the 800 block of Canal Street with lively songs, games and giveaways. Also at that location, State Representative Neil Abramson and Criminal Court Judge Karen Herman will teach children dreidel games and offer prizes.

Throughout the day, children may visit the life-size gingerbread house at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, and the Living History characters will be making the rounds on Canal Street, offering a glimpse of Christmases past.

“We want to remind people that Canal Street is a great place to be this holiday season, and we want them to come out and support our Downtown merchants,” said DDD President & CEO Kurt Weigle.

Architecture + Visual Arts Event Des Cours Open Through Sunday

DesCours, an annual five-day contemporary architecture and visual arts event, has returned to Downtown through December 14.  DesCours looks toward the future in showcasing cutting-edge new media and interactive installations while embracing New Orleans' rich cultural heritage. During DesCours, internationally recognized architects, artists and musicians will transform spaces within Downtown and the French Quarter into destinations for visitors and locals alike.

Over the course of five days the public is invited to see contemporary architecture and art installations within walkways, rooftops and buildings located Downtown and in private courtyards located in the historic French Quarter. These spaces, which are often less traveled and hidden from public view, provide a rich architectural framework in which to view both the installations and sites themselves.

Throughout DesCours, ten bands, including Rebirth Brass Band, Kidd Jordan, and the Treme Brass Band, will be showcased alongside the architects' and artists' installations. Event goers will witness how each performance interacts with, transforms and enhances these sites and installations.

“DesCours is another example of Downtown welcoming industries of the mind – art and architecture largely contribute to Downtown as an attractive home for the entrepreneurs and innovators that will drive our future economy,” said DDD President Kurt Weigle.

DesCours is a project of the American Institute of Architects and is sponsored in part by the Downtown Development District.  For more information, visit www.descours.us.

Mr. Bingle Triumpantly Returns to Canal Street

Mr. Bingle, that lovable snowman that graced the exterior of Maison Blanche for more than 40 years, was back Downtown on December 6 as he led the inaugural Canal Street: Your Home for the Holidays parade presented by the DDD and The Roosevelt Hotel. The occasion also commemorated Mr. Bingle’s 60th birthday and the 100th birthday of the Maison Blanche building, now the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

In addition to Mr. Bingle, the parade featured holiday-themed floats, marching bands, walking characters, Saints, Hornets and Zephyrs mascots and Santa.

Activities continue through the month as part of the Canal Street: Your Home for the Holidays campaign. Visit www.neworleansdowntown.com for complete details.
